Goodbye Japan

Kyoto does not have an airport and is basically a suburb of Osaka.  After a good farewell breakfast with some of the people that had not left, we took a van to the airport to wait for our flight.  Of course there was some last minute shopping before boarding the plane.  

Our flight to LA was uneventful and I was able to sleep for most of it.  Customs was quick and easy.  It turned out my youngest son and his wife were leaving that afternoon from LAX so we got to spend a few minutes before heading off to our destinations.

Some final thoughts on Japan.  I know a lot of the food pictured in my blog was challenging and mostly unfamiliar to Americans, don't let that scare you off.  We were on a culinary tour which meant we were trying very traditional Japanese foods.  If you want to avoid that there's plenty of options for food that would be more to your liking.

Also, keep in mind that you're going to have to take your shoes off A LOT!  Wear something that is easy to put on and take off.  Also, a good translation app will come in very handy.  Go visit craftsmen.  The pride they take from their work is inspiring.  Study a little history before you go.  This is an ancient land with ancient cultures.  They are a quiet respectful people so please return the favor by being thankful and aware of your surroundings.  If you follow these simple rules you'll be rewarded with a fabulous, exotic trip you won't soon forget.

 It had been a great trip.  We got to go to big cities, smaller heritage sites, and out into the country.  We saw things most tourist can't and we developed new friendships and strengthen old ones.

A Day of Art

 This morning we were treated to a beautiful Japanese breakfast.  There were many small dishes most of which I couldn’t identify but it was all very good.  Food is such an art form here.  In some ways the presentation is every bit as important as the food.  After checking out, we headed out for a day of art.  Our first stop was an old school house that closed when there were only three students left.  It is now the Hachi & Seizo Tashima Museum of Picture Book Art.  Each room is filled with art that reflects the lightness of childhood.  The first room had people and other things made by combining old wood and painting it bright colors.  The museum continues with different installations in each of the classrooms.  Some of the exhibits are interactive such as the one where drums are played by the visitors riding bikes.  It was all very cheerful and uplifting. Tamakiya

 We were up early this morning to catch our Shinkansen to Tamakiya.  The train is fast a very quiet including the passengers.  No one talks enroute and it makes for a very peaceful journey.  We had shipped our large suitcases ahead to Kanazawa and just had an overnight bag to take with us on the train.  This is a common practice in Japan to avoid hauling lots of luggage onto the train. Upon arrival we were met by our driver for the next two days.  This area is on the west side of the island and has lots of snow (and consequently skiing) and is very mountainous.  The mountainsides are covered in lush landscape and rice fields lined the roads.  This is the complete opposite of Tokyo with small towns along our journey.  Tunnels protect the roads from winter snows and are frequent and relatively long. Tokyo

 The first thing most people ask when I mention that I’m going to Japan is how long is the flight over.  This time I flew directly to Tokyo from Dallas so it took a little over 13 hours but since we passed the International Date Line I arrived on Wednesday afternoon even though I left Tuesday around noon.  A flight that long gives me time to eat, read or watch a movie, and still have time to sleep.  You should try it sometime. There’s a store called  Tokyo Kimono Shoes  that takes old kimonos and repurposes them into sneakers, purses, bags, and smaller items.  If you want a specific kimono pattern you have to order them three months in advance which I did and was to pick them up upon arrival.  Since everything took longer than anticipated I had to hop into a cab the minute I arrived at the hotel (Ritz-Carlton Tokyo) and ride the 30 minutes it took to get to the store.  It’s a cute little store and I had enough time to do a little shopping bef...
