A Day of Art
This morning we were treated to a beautiful Japanese breakfast. There were many small dishes most of which I couldn’t identify but it was all very good. Food is such an art form here. In some ways the presentation is every bit as important as the food.
After checking out, we headed out for a day of art. Our first stop was an old school house that closed when there were only three students left. It is now the Hachi & Seizo Tashima Museum of Picture Book Art. Each room is filled with art that reflects the lightness of childhood. The first room had people and other things made by combining old wood and painting it bright colors. The museum continues with different installations in each of the classrooms. Some of the exhibits are interactive such as the one where drums are played by the visitors riding bikes. It was all very cheerful and uplifting.
Our next stop was Matsudai NO BUTAL. This modern looking museum combines an indoor gallery with outdoor installations. One could spend hours here wondering up the hillside to see the art. We took a break and ate the delicious buffet offered in their cafe.
Our final art visit was to the House of light. Constructed much like a traditional Japanese house, it is equipped with a roof that moves to reveal an opening that allows you to look up to the sky. Since it was clouded that affect was muted but you can see how beautiful it could be with blue skies and puffy clouds. The house is available for overnight guests.
With our art tour over it was time to head to the train station for our trip to Kanazawa. It gave me an opportunity to catch a little nap. We were sad to say goodbye to our guide for the last three days, Yoshie. She had proved to be and excellent and knowledgeable companion.
Our hotel in Kanazawa is the Hyatt adjacent to the train station. I had stayed here on a previous visit. Attached to the hotel and the train station is a big shopping and dining center. We had eaten so much the last few days we took advantage of the 7Eleven in the train station. You might laugh but they actually have good food, especially their egg salad sandwiches!
Tomorrow: Exploring Kanazawa
